The VF II SS V represents the absolute pinnacle of what Holden's engineers could achieve with the Commodore before the Elizabeth plant closed its doors in October 2017. For the final update of the iconic nameplate, Holden upgraded the V8 from the outgoing 6.0-litre to the 6.2-litre LS3 — the same engine used in the Chevrolet SS sold in the United States — producing 304kW and 570Nm. It was the most powerful naturally aspirated engine ever fitted to a production Commodore SS, and it sounds exactly as good as those numbers suggest, particularly with the bi-modal exhaust system switched to its more vocal setting.
The SS V is where the Commodore range gets genuinely special. Magnetic Ride Control adaptive suspension — the same technology used in Ferraris and Chevrolet Corvettes — reads the road surface and adjusts damping in real time, giving the SS V a ride and handling balance that was simply impossible in previous generations. Switch to Sport mode and the car transforms entirely — the throttle sharpens, the transmission holds gears longer, and the exhaust opens up. It's a car with genuine split personality, and it does both brilliantly.
Inside, the SS V is properly equipped — heated and cooled leather sports seats with SS V-exclusive side bolstering, a power driver's seat, head-up display, an 8-inch MyLink touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and satellite navigation, blind spot monitoring, lane departure alert, forward collision alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and hands-free parking assist.
